Inspiration
Night Kitchen Interactive collaborated with the museum to create a website and online interactive to accompany the exhibition Teenie Harris, Photographer: An American Story which allows visitors to explore the photographs in-depth and discover the life and career of Charles “Teenie” Harris, one of the 20th Century’s most significant African-American photographers. The Carnegie Museum of Art worked with the local community to discover the people, places and events captured by the Pittsburgh-based photographer in preparation for the exhibition, which features nearly 1,000 of Harris’ most distinctive photographs.
Narration
Night Kitchen and the Carnegie worked closely to develop an engaging and insightful web presence for the Teenie Harris exhibition, which includes an interactive photo explorer, stories and multimedia describing his life, career, and the museum’s ongoing work to provide public access to the collection of archived images.
Design
Inspired by the aesthetics of Harris’ distinctive photographic style, we created a dynamic and exploratory interactive that immerses visitors in the exhibition images and showcases the impact of Teenie Harris’ career as a photographer in the African-American community. All 1,000 photographs from the exhibition are made available to view as high resolution, "zoomable" images.
Interaction
The photographs are organized by theme, date, narrative “thread” and exhibition number, enabling a diverse range of audiences to discover the connections Harris’ poignant images formed, and how his career documented the narratives of Pittsburgh’s history.
