Night Kitchen Interactive is excited to be working with the Carnegie Museum of Art to develop the Teenie Harris Online Exhibit and Digital Archive in preparation for the upcoming exhibition, Teenie Harris, Photographer: An American Story, opening in late October 2011. A website will present the story of the Teenie Harris Archive and will allow the visitor to explore the 1000 images showcased in the exhibition, both online and through kiosks in the installation. We will also be developing a digital archive that will enable visitors to browse and search all 80,000+ Teenie Harris negatives in the archive, in addition to enabling visitor comments, tags and favoriting of the images.
The exhibition will showcase the story of Teenie Harris, one of the 20th Century’s most significant African American photographers who lived and worked in Pittsburgh from the 1930s through the 1970s. Since acquiring the collection of 80,000+ negatives in 2001, the CMA has worked with researchers and the community to reveal the people, places and stories captured in Harris’ images. This new web presence will illuminate the importance of the Teenie Harris Archive, encourage visitor exploration of the images and continue research of the image’s subject matter through visitor-submitted stories.
Night Kitchen Interactive has been consulting with the Carnegie Museum of Art on interactive solutions for the Teenie Harris exhibition since 2010. The online exhibit and digital archive are being produced in conjunction with a larger strategic redesign of the Carnegie’s primary website and online collection to be completed in 2012.
