Social Media Release

The social media release is useful tool for getting the word out about your project launch. Just like a press release, a good social media release concisely relays the key facts of your announcement. So how is a social media release different from a press release? And why do you need one?
First, a social media release is a url that contains the main news points and features of whatever it is you are announcing. It features key links, including images, embedded video and social bookmarking.
The whole point of an SMR is to offer a single url that bloggers and other online media can easily link to, draw from, start a conversation about, or share via Digg, StumpleUpon or Facebook. In other words, while a press release should help make a reporter’s job easier, a social media release makes social media and online reporting and conversations easier.
There’s a lot of talk about whether social media releases will replace the traditional press release. The debate is certainly interesting (if you are interested, start with Die! Press release! Die! Die! Die!) I think the SMR and the press release should operate side by side. More on that later.
