Inspiration

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History sought to create a comprehensive online presence for distributing Osteoware, a software program that enables researchers to easily document and analyze human skeletal remains using an intuitive computerized data entry system.

Narration

Originally developed as a means to inventory and manage data from the NMNH’s physical collection, the museum wanted to expand the availability of this program by providing a destination for researchers and scientists to access software and engage in an online discussion forum.

Design

Night Kitchen Interactive worked with the NMNH to develop the Osteoware site in alignment with the existing brand and web presence for the museum, creating a single website for users to find information, downloads, and a community of researchers involved with similar projects.

Interaction

Using the Drupal content management system, the Osteoware site enables multiple administrators from archaeology departments in various institutions to add and update content. Using the newly-developed site the online community can continue to develop and expand the Osteoware database, which uses a structured query language (SQL) database for powerful analysis of results.
