Inspiration

Based on the idea that young people should be seen and heard, The Five Freedoms organization envisioned a website that would serve as a 21st Century “public square” on putting First Amendment rights into action in our public schools.

Narration

Bringing the organization’s tagline One Nation. Many Voices to life, Night Kitchen Interactive created online social networking site and a resource-filled website where visitors can join a vibrant community of concerned citizens, share stories, collaborate on projects, and discover new ways build democratic skills.

Design

To engage a wide range of audiences, Night Kitchen Interactive designed a home page that immediately draws attention to common concerns surrounding the first five freedoms of the First Amendment, and created landing pages that cater to more specialized interests.

Night Kitchen Interactive then integrated one of the world’s leading open-source content management systems, Drupal, with the leading social networking platform, Ning. The result is a website that supports full web 2.0 collaboration tools and eases content management and organization.

Interaction

To encourage participation, Night Kitchen Interactive incorporated a wide variety of activity levels: visitors can “Get on the Soapbox” to share their opinions, “Make New Connections,” and visit the Five Freedoms blogosphere. Educators can take action the website’s “5 things You Can Do” feature while visitors of all backgrounds can take online polls, quizzes, and surveys to see how their opinions measure up against the courts – and each other.
