Inspiration
The Parrish Art Museum wanted to create an interactive online experience that would encourage visitors to journey through its collection of works by the artists of Long Island’s East End, a principle locus for Abstract Expressionists.
Narration
Focused on the idea of “connections”, the site brings to the forefront the relationships between events, artists, artwork and locations, immersing visitors in the interwoven stories surrounding the enduring presence of artists in the region.
Design
Incorporating an innovative use of Google Maps, Night Kitchen created a robust, intuitive exploration of the personal stories, historical forces, artists and artwork that shaped this artists’ community. The project’s mission is clearly displayed on the home page, while a clean site interface provides a compelling viewing experience of over 1600 images drawn from the museum’s collection.
Interaction
Online exhibit tours brought to life through integrated, interactive maps help visitors view not just the art, but the locations and relationships which gave rise to the art and artists of Long Island’s East End. The mash up of the open source tools Google maps and Collective Access provide a flexible, extensible foundation for this ever-growing exhibit.
