Janneken Smucker

Janneken Smucker

Inspiration

  • My desire for balance in all things

Narration

  • Films, stories, & histories that perfectly capture a mood or a moment:
  • Lost in Translation (2003, Sofia Coppola)
  • The Awakening (1899, Kate Chopin)
  • Gay New York: Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World, 1890-1940 (1995, George Chauncey)

Design

  • Objects with a distinct perspective that cannot be mistaken for anything else:
  • Morris chairs, WPA posters, Amish quilts from the early 20th century, heirloom tomatoes

Interaction

  • Shared breath in a sweaty yoga class
  • My ongoing quest to create the perfect pizza crust

Content Specialist

Janneken recently completed her doctorate in American Civilization from the University of Delaware, focusing on twentieth-century material, visual, and consumer culture. Drawing on her experience as a NEH-funded Public Engagement and Material Culture Fellow at the University of Delaware, Janneken strives to share humanities content with diverse, public audiences by harnessing the use of new technologies, social media, and accessible language to make art, history, and culture come alive. In addition to authoring numerous scholarly articles, Janneken has also held fellowship appointments at the Smithsonian Institution, Winterthur Museum & Library, and the International Quilt Study Center & Museum. Janneken served as the primary contact for content migration and social media facilitation in the redesign of Monticello.org.
