inspiration

Bristol-Myers Squibb wanted to enhance its sales force’s understanding of the complex choices made by physicians when diagnosing and treating bipolar disorder. To convey the relevance of the subject matter, emphasis needed to be placed on bringing case studies to life through rich-media presentations and real-life problem solving.

narration

As an introduction to the training, Night Kitchen Interactive developed a thought-provoking rich-media segment that conveyed the impact that bipolar disorder can have on patients and their caregivers.

For the training, two scenario-based learning modules were developed using representative case studies. The scenarios followed the interaction between a resident physician and a psychiatrist as they gathered patient information, reviewed it, and created treatment plans. As an observer, the learner was given an insider’s perspective on the complexity of the issues and factors considered by a physician.

Through this process, Night Kitchen transformed existing print-based training materials from "tell" to "show," creating simulated environments in which trainees learned by doing.

design

Night Kitchen produced animated case studies using virtual characters for this scenario-based training. Content was presented in the form of scenarios and job aids such as life history charts, patient mood journals, and treatment algorithms. Illustrative tables, graphs, charts, and interactive decision point screens were interspersed to create an added level of realism to the scenes.

interaction

As the resident physician presents his diagnosis and treatment in an oral practicum setting, the learner is asked to provide assistance by answering questions that require the discrimination of key concepts, explanation of treatment decisions, and prediction of patient and physician behavior. Each response to an assessment question is immediately followed by specific remediation feedback.
